Unintentional burns and scalds in vulnerable populations: the very young and the very old, Victoria July 2001 to June 2003

Author: Cassell, E., Clapperton, A., Ashby, K.
Year: 2004
Type: Web Page

Abstract:

This article describes the frequency, pattern, causes and mechanisms of unintentional burns and scalds in the two most vulnerable age groups for these injuries - children aged 0-4 years and seniors aged 70 years and older with recommendations for prevention. The 2-year study provides preliminary evidence that currently implemented countermeasures especially in the area of scalds prevention is having a beneficial effect. However, a multi-strategy approach that combines education, publicity, regulation and enforcement, incentives and safety design innovations needs to be adopted if we are serious about further reducing the burden of burns and scalds on the most vulnerable groups in our community.
