Abstract:

Discusses the world's aging population & related housing concerns in urban settings, reviewing challenges facing major public policies of developing & developed countries alike. Increasing general populations, elderly populations, & urban concentration are charted for industrial & developing countries, showing significant leaps, 1960-1992, & even sharper increases projected to 2025. Housing is presented as a defining feature of quality of life; universal economic, political, & social barriers to its accessibility are examined. Two major public policy debates ask who is responsible for the care of the elderly & how income, health care, housing, & social services can be integrated.
