In the 1970s, U.S. census projections underestimated the 1990 elderly & oldest-old populations by 1.7 million. The deficit of detailed health & demographic data on the oldest-old segment of the population was not even recognized until mid-1985, when The Milbank Quarterly intensified its focus on this segment's impact on health services. Health outcomes for the oldest-old segment are still difficult to predict, due to the high prevalence of comorbidity & functional impairment. Progress in assistive devices, health & function interventions, & disease eradication & prevention could lead to improvement in the aggregate health of this population & reduce long-term care needs.
