This paper was prepared for the Standing Committee on Housing and Small Buildings Canadian Commission On Building and Fire Codes National Research Council Canada as the result of a review that was initiated on basic stair safety issues. The issue of stair design was raised by the Standing Committee with respect to trend widths to accommodate larger foot sizes.
