Some notes on measurement of slip resistance

Ergonomics Australia

Author: Stevenson, M.
Year: 2001
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Slips and falls are a common cause of accidental injuries in public places. Measurements of the coefficient of friction using machines that simulate walking conditions are important in developing slip resistant surfaces and footwear. The portable BPST pendulum test machine can be used to ensure that new surfaces meet the Standards Australia requirements. A coefficient of friction value is peculiar to a particular combination of shoe, floor surface, wetness or liquid on the floor or shoe, direction and speed of motion. In considering legal liability for accidents, the author suggests that expert witnesses on slipping accidents should be aware of not putting too much emphasis on measurements only but also take into account other factors involved at the time of the accident.
