A case study of the effect that progressive aging may have on the social lives of elder tenants in enriched housing facilities in New York City, based on structured personal interviews with 210 residents of 2 facilities operated by the Jewish Association for Services for the Aged. Findings confirm that the frequency & intensity of exchanges with community dwelling friends reached higher levels than those between respondents (Rs) & their relatives living outside the complexes, although the latter relations were relatively strong as well. Female Rs reported higher levels of assistance, as did the young-old (those under age 75). Gaps in social support networks were closely associated with decrements recorded in personal contentment with one's situation. Results lead to recommendations for planners & administrators of enriched housing programs that focus on nurturing & preserving the natural helping networks of elderly tenants.
