The quest for successful aging is very compatible with the current social work practice emphasis on strengths perspective. Elderly persons are one population-at-risl who stand to benefit from the application of a strengths perspective in practice and research. This paper examines the conceptual & practical relevance of Aaron Antonovsky's "sense of coherence" for implementing a strengths perspective in gerontological social work, drawing on secondary face-to-face interview & questionnaire data from 128 women, mean age 82, in a senior housing complex. Sense of coherence is conceptualized as a generalized way of viewing the world & one's life in it, & results are discussed in terms of socialization & health. Practice applications are examined.
