Shopping mall patrons were observed entering and leaving a department store. Their preference for means of ascending and descending an elevation required to enter/exit the store was recorded and compared. Of 3554 observations recorded, 65.5% of those approaching/leaving the store preferred ramps over the steps. The study admits to some limitations, yet results indicated significant differences in the preferences of mall patrons. Qualitative data offered other support favoring ramps over steps.
