Canter proposes a number of techniques for the ordering the relative importance of various aspects of the built environment. In many cases this is a subjective matter and most of these techniques are based on user response either by eliciting ratings directly from the occupants or indirectly by measuring the degree of correlation between one physical variable and the expression of overall user satisfaction. Other methods simply measure the incidence of comment or complaint about a subject. However, objective empirical techniques are also available: these rely on measuring the correlation between a change in the physical environment and a change in the behaviour or response of its occupants
