A review of the literature suggests that elderly women may be responsive to a variety of mental health treatments. A strong correlation exists between an individual's social support & the likelihood that the person will develop mental illness. Thus, the loss & isolation of elderly women place them at psychological risk for reactive depression; likewise, the social changes that accompany aging usually compound depressive responses. The mental health care needs of elderly women may be better met with a shift in focus from direct services to self-help/support groups that serve more people at less cost & with no social stigma. Social support must be aimed at assisting the older woman to maintain her independence & functional abilities & enhance her dignity & self-esteem.
