Various types of organizations are compared in terms of their effectiveness in dealing with the problem of loneliness; in particular, charitable organizations are compared with professional social work interventions, & evaluated in terms of meeting members' needs for intimacy. The value of old age organizations is argued on the basis of research begun in 1985 on 9 old people's clubs & 3 religious organizations in the south of England, using interviews, participant observation, & documentary evidence. It is found that friendship & indigenous leadership are important social processes in sustaining elderly participants. Implications for social policy are proposed.
