This article provides background information to slip resistance testing, and discusses the limitations associated with the available testing devices for determining coefficient of friction. It also considers the legal aspects of slippery floors and the deficiencies associated with the standards, including the way in which they have been used. Rather than specifying minimum coefficients of friction for flooring materials, consideration should be given to establishing classes of slip resistant materials to be used for specific areas so that manufacturers can classify their products appropriately.
