A review of the literature on aging & popular stereotypes of the elderly in Australia supports an analysis of three dimensions of culture in relation to the meaning of experiences for the aged: dominant power structure; subcultures of age, class, gender, & occupation; & cultures constructed by the aged, discussed in terms of material conditions of living. For females, the ability to care for the home, self, & family defines their major life roles & sense of worth. Aging can damage self-perceptions as one's ability to carry out these duties decreases. Public policymakers are urged to adopt a less stereotypical approach to services for the elderly & focus on empowerment of old people in defining services.
