Analysis of value-in-use is a tool for the rational design of products; through the technique originated in product tests, it can be used for buildings or parts of buildings. Functions are analyzed by breaking them down hierarchically into simple functions. These are measured, using physical, ergonomic or statistical tools, and then evaluated in terms of their relative importance to the user (users are not “standardized and do not resemble the marionette used by the sales departments). Value-in-use depends on the trade –off between expenses incurred and services rendered. Expenses include financial outlay and efforts required; services are direct (functional) or indirect (esthetic). This information is then plotted, enabling the comparative value-in-use of a product to be ascertained. In reality, many products are to be found to be inadequate, often because of an oversimplification of the objectives of an enterprise. The analysis of value-in-use should reduce the empirical aspect of design.
