A grounded-theory approach is used to examine continuity & change in physical self-evaluation & self-care among a group of healthy men & women (N = 12) in age groups 50-59 & 70-79. Focused interviews were conducted to identify the evaluative criteria that these individuals apply to the aging body & the behavioral outcomes of the self-assessment process. Analysis focuses on sex differences, perception of personal control over health & well-being, continuity of approach to the body, & the perception of time left to live. Findings highlight personal & social resources & common behavioral strategies employed by older persons in managing the ageing physical self.
