A report of how, in conjunction with the National Institute of Aging, the Behavioral & Social Research programs support social & behavioral research & training in regard to the aging process & the place of older people in society. Stereotypes of older people are being challenged by recent research on the aging process. Several principles are evident: (1) aging is part of living; (2) the aging process is variable; (3) disabilities of old age are not inevitable or universal; & (4) age-related problems can be minimized through appropriate treatment &/or help. The Norwood-Montefiore Aging Study discussed in this journal (see related abstracts in SOPODA 12:2) supports these principles. As increasing numbers of elderly require care, utilization of the type of programs described herein is necessary for the planning & provision of cost-effective health & social services for the majority of older people residing in their own homes.
