Abstract:

Inadequate community housing remains a major unmet need and policy reform issue for community health systems. In 1984, the Pennsylvania State Office of Mental Health evaluated the effectiveness of its policy to expand residential facilities as a means of improving success in community tenure for persons recently discharged from state mental hospitals. Results indicate differences in community tenure by type of community services utilized and community residential arrangement. Future policy, however, should put great emphasis on understanding the importance of client satisfaction with residential arrangements as a determinant of successful community tenure.
