First published in 1990, this code on barrier-free accessibility in buildings is now in its third edition. The code was originally intended for wheel chair users and was written primarily with their needs in mind. Through the years it was found that people with other forms of physical infirmities or limitations but who are not wheelchair bound such as those with visual impairement, the aged and the elderly, and families with young children should also not be disadvantaged by the built environment. This code serves to provide the basic guidelines and raise the awareness of developers, architects, engineers and homeowners how this can be achieved.
