Closing the gaps: housing and support for people with dual disabilities

Housing Needs Series

Author: Dickman, S.
Year: 1996
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

This paper examines the housing needs of people with dual disabilities: people with an intellectual disability who also have a psychiatric illness. The author concludes that people with dual disabilities are living in inappropriate housing with limited access to public housing that have long waiting lists. Furthermore, meeting the housing needs of people with dual disabilities is compounded by the difficulty in organising an appropriate support package. Issues and recommendations arising from a literature review of the topic and a report from a workshop which focused on the housing needs, support linkages, and barriers to access are presented and followed by suggestions for further work and recommendations.
