Can falls in patients with dementia be prevented?

Age and Ageing

Author: Shaw, F. E., Kenny, R. A.

Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Prevention of falls in patients with dementia has been studied. For such patients, the annual incidence of falls is 40-60%, double the rate of the elderly population that is normal in a cognitive sense. The serious-injury rate is higher and the prognosis is less good in the patients with dementia. Medications given such patients are a factor in falls, as are cardiovascular disorders. Interventions can modify risk factors in the patients without dementia. A multidisciplinary intervention strategy, dealing with multiple factors, might be of help for patients with dementia.
