A commentary on the articles in this journal (see related abstracts in SOPODA 12:2), all based on the Norwood-Montefiore Aging Study (NMAS) funded by the National Institute on Aging in 1983, which sought to determine the impact of depression, retardation, sleep disorders, & abuse of medication on the health & daily lives of the elderly in this neighborhood of New York, NY, as well as how health services contribute to the well-being of elderly people living at home. A random sample of 1,855 elderly Medicare recipients were followed for 36 months & interviewed at 6-month intervals. It is noted that maintaining the cooperation of the Norwood community for the study period was a major undertaking, & gratitude is expressed to those who helped in the compilation of the data.
