Gender & ethnic variations in activities, family relationships, & feelings about growing older were studied via analysis of questionnaire data from 128 Anglo, Hispanic, & American Indian adults aged 60-92 in NM. Women were more likely than men to participate in arts & crafts, cooking, housework, thinking, reading, & church going. Compared to other ethnic groups, American Indians were more likely to participate in child care & farming, with females more likely to attend church & perform volunteer work, & men more likely to work to support themselves. In general, respondents reported feeling closer to their families since turning 60, & (particularly women) cited increased freedom, free time, & independence as advantages of aging; disadvantages included poor health, limitations on activities, & loneliness.
