Examines the application of postmodern theories to structured dependency theories of aging, with focus on four themes: (1) the critique of grand theory; (2) the prioritization of low culture & understanding, as opposed to elite or high culture; (3) the recognition of diversity; & (4) the value of personal views & emotions. It is suggested that postmodernism allows new avenues of research & understanding that may benefit aging populations, particularly in the area of service structure & delivery. Added attention to individualism, devaluation of grand theory, & the increased importance of consumerism may lead to service providers planning for needs as well as wants, with greater input from elderly populations. It is warned that strict adherence to postmodernism would render ageism nonexistent, although this threat is not seen as probable.
