The HMinfo supports the Building Better Homes campaign

Published

The New South Wales government is discriminating against people with disability and older people.

They unveiled an ambitious new housing plan in the 2024-25 budget, but have refused to sign up to national mandatory design standards that require new developments to offer basic accessibility.

These standards are not difficult or expensive: they simply require developers to build a step-free shower and level entry to the houses. You can read the full standards here: https://livablehousingaustralia.org.au/lha-silver/

The Australian Building Codes Board modelling for these standards shows it will only add about 1% to the cost of a new build.

Inaccessible housing leaves people isolated, preventing them from leaving their house or visiting family or friends.
