Throughout 2018 MOD.A has been busy promoting home modifications in aged care both to the Department of Health and through the National Aged Care Alliance (NACA). We continue to participate in the quarterly meetings of NACA, which always include opportunities to question the Department of Health about current issues or problems within home-based care for older Australians, and to engage in how the sector will look after reform has been implemented in 2020.
MOD.A also actively contributes to position papers that NACA releases to the public and which inform its lobbying for reform issues. One paper released this year was A secure, affordable home for older Australians, to which MOD.A made a significant contribution that highlighted accessibility and safety as key considerations of housing as people age. NACA has also recently uploaded its position on Assistive Technology and again MOD.A has been involved in a number of advisory group consultations about this piece of work. It is important to note that the research on which the position paper is based did make significant mention of some modifications which are applied alongside assistive technologies, but we have ensured that the recommendations that relate to the way in which AT is funded do not include home modifications, as the funding and administrative issues that our industry faces are separate to those of the AT sector. The paper, Assistive Technology for Older Australians, is now available on the NACA website.
