Older people want to age in their communities. They want to age in their own home.
One way to make that happen is by designing houses to support it. But the NSW Government is refusing to make the necessary changes. For more than a decade, NSW has had a voluntary set of accessibility guidelines - and only 5% of new homes have complied with those guidelines. This is simply not keeping up. Something needs to change. We need to get serious about supporting older people to live independently in our communities. We need mandatory accessibility standards now.
