Most older Australians are unprepared for and have no plans for end-of-life health care decisions, potentially leaving them vulnerable and unable to make their own medical decisions, according to Advance Care Planning Australia.
The organisation found 70% of older people were without an Advance Care Directive, which is a health care plan for when you may no longer be able to communicate decisions yourself.
Thirty per cent of people did have an Advance Care Directive – of whom some had documented their preferences for care, others had appointed a substitute decision-maker legally empowered to make decisions of their behalf, and some had done both.
