Addenum to Standards in action: Women with Disability

Published

The Addendum to the Standards in Action: Women with Disability has been developed and is now available on the Ageing, Disability and Home Care (ADHC) website (www.adhc.nsw.gov.au/sp/quality/standards_in_action).

The Addendum was developed in consultation with representatives from organisations that work with women with disabilities to provide additional guidance to support services working specifically with women with disabilities and their families to meet the NSW Disability Standards. It aims to ensure
that services are provided in accordance with the principles in the Disability Inclusion Act (DIA) 2014 and references the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

While the Standards in action manual provides guidance on working with people with disability from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and CALD backgrounds, there is a need to build on this advice in regard to women with disability and children with disability. This addendum is not aimed at being a prescriptive document but has been developed to assist service providers in having regard to the principles of the DIA when providing supports or services to women with disability.

As the NSW DSS meet the general principles of the DIA (the general principles are in s4 of the Disability Inclusion Act 2014 (NSW)), service providers will need to continue to implement the NSW DSS in order to meet their obligations under the DIA and Disability Inclusion Regulation 2014. Providers must still refer to the Standards in action manual as a practical guide.
