Aged Care Digital Transformation

A digital transformation is underway in Australia’s aged care sector. It comes among eager activity at international and national levels including two key initiatives announced this month alone.

The World Health Organisation launched the Global Initiative on Digital Health to align countries’ systems to global best practices, norms and standards. And the Australian Digital Health Agency launched Australia’s National Digital Health Strategy 2023 - 2028 and accompanying Strategy Delivery Roadmap.

With outcomes focused on inclusive, data-driven, digitally-enabled and person-centred systems, the strategy outlines Australia’s next steps toward greater digital connectivity between care settings. As ADHA clinical lead Dr Steve Hambleton tells Australian Ageing Agenda, “It’s about sharing information; making it available at the point where you need it, when you need it.”

Also coming this year among the government’s digital transformation agenda for the sector is the Aged care Data and Digital Strategy. Meanwhile at the industry level work is underway, including with conformance to the My Health Record – there are around 15 aged care software compliant according to the register. But as the inaugural digital maturity report from the Aged Care Industry IT Council highlights, the sector as a whole has a long way to go.

These findings – to be unpacked at this month’s ITAC Conference – highlight shortcomings in many areas including innovation, use of data analytics, client-centred care and cybersecurity insurance and data.
